GnG is Retiring?! Pt.1

Hello, hello.

Long time no see! We know, shame on us.

I just wanted to reach out to all of our followers to let everyone know that Geeky ‘n Girly will be retiring here within the next few months. Kelly and I have decided after much thought that we’d like to branch out on our own! So technically, we’re not really leaving the blogosphere! (Don’t be sad! Or mad!)

I have only just recently set up a new blog for myself and I would abso-freaking-lutely love it if everyone who enjoyed Geeky ‘n Girly would continue to follow me on my new blog! It’s called One-Sixth Geek, and is currently hosted via WordPress.com, but will be moving to my own domain sometime this year.

So please, clicky click and subscribe because I would hate to lose touch with some of the nicest coolest people I’ve met in the blogging world!

Much love and see everyone on One-Sixth Geek!

Current K-Drama: Trot Lovers

trot

This is the first post I’ve done on a Kdrama before and I think that is absolutely crazy because these shows are my primary form of entertainment. Sometime last year I did a post on kpop well I also love to watch dramas and Trot Lovers is the one I am currently watching. This is just a quick post with my thoughts on the show.

First this is my favorite type of drama. It has the dramatics of course but it is hilarious and also has romance. The cast I love them all and I am so surprisingly happy with Shin Sung-roc as Jo Geun-woo. The only other thing I had seen him in was My Love from Another Star and I hated him because you know he was the bad guy and did terrible things but in Trot Lovers he is one of the funniest actors in a drama I’ve seen in a while. Just his personality, how blunt he is and I think mainly how different in a good way he is from My Love from Another Star. I haven’t decided who I ship yet it is going to be a very tough choice between the two male leads. I will probably end up torn like with Boys Over Flowers.

I like that it has music. I loved Dream High 1 and 2. Monstar was also a great drama that centered around music. Since I love kpop so much when I know it is musically based I’m going to want to watch and this doesn’t disappoint whatsoever. The voices are very good.

From the loan sharks and how funny they are to the way Jang Joon-hyun is with Choi Choon-hee’s younger sister it makes me laugh and touches my heart. If you’ve never watched a Kdrama or are searching for a new one I highly recommend this one. It’s feel good and has such a happy vibe. If you’re also watching let me know your thoughts on the show and the cast!

June’s Lootcrate: Transform!

6tag_240614-170732

June 2014 marks my first LOOTCRATE! Cheers!

What can I say? I came across Lootcrate by chance and instantaneously had to have it! I even went as far as to go to my Ipsy and cancel my spot on the waitlist. (For those girls who don’t know: www.ipsy.com – Go now!)

So I don’t have any special unveiling for everyone like what I’m seeing around the interwebs. I think there are plenty of videos to watch if you’d like to watch people open their special little boxes. However, I did take a few pictures of what the Lootcrate contains.

June’s Transform Lootcrate:

  • Marty Mcprime Transformer T-shirt
  • Transformers figurine collectable – Hasbro & The Loyal Subjects
  • Transformers sticker – Hasbro & The Loyal Subjects
  • Hex Bug: Transformer Edition
  • MLG (Major League Gaming) wrist warmer
  • MLG Team Sticker Set – TeamENVY, TeamCURSE, TeamOPTIC
  • MLG Starter Kit – 1 month free GameBattles Premium Access
  • Lootcrate June Button
  • Lootcrate June Booklet
  • 3 Warheads

6tag_240614-182115

I was pretty stoked when I opened my Transformers figurine box. I got friggin’ Bumblebee!

.. And also, a Decepticons sticker. Sort of clashes.

All in all, I was pretty happy with all the items that I received in the June Lootcrate.

I just had one complaint. The t-shirt that I ordered was a shapeless square t-shirt. Now, I chose my size under the “Women’s” category so I was kind of expecting a more fitted flattering shirt for a woman’s body. The shirt was not that. It was a box. It made me a box.

I digress. Let me just say that Lootcrate is awesome and if you haven’t had the chance to subscribe, stop making excuses. Go. Go now and subscribe. I have a feeling that each Lootcrate will remind you how good of an investment that this monthly subscription is. I mean, who doesn’t love a goody box filled with geeky merchandise?

Oh, and for everyone’s entertainment.. Let me introduce you to my cat, Iris, and her first experience with a Hex Bug.

Have a great Saturday!

Geek meets Geek. But.. how?

Image

Online

This is definitely the most common way. It’s the safest easiest way for us geeks to connect with others geeks. Literally. Most of us are techies by nature and are often online quite a bit. This applies not only to the internet in general, but also online gaming.

Pros

– Meets geeks from all over the world

– No judgement over appearances

Cons

– Interaction is limited to online

My Suggestions

Keep up with the good work? 🙂 This is the best way to meet other geeks, in my opinion, so no advice needed.

Conventions

I only recently went to my first geeky convention. (I know. Shame on me.) That was QuakeCon. I couldn’t have felt more at home surrounded by people that I know wouldn’t judge me, but actually be interested in me. It’s too much fun enjoying everything that a convention has to offer with people just like yourself. You gt to share your excitement with them and vice versa.

Pros

– Meets geeks of the same type as yourself. (I.E.: Otaku, Gamer, Comic Reader)

– Meet local & traveling geeks

Cons

– Conventions are often crowded, busy, and loud

My Suggestions

Get involved in the activities that interest you at the conventions. More often than not, they’re pretty fun and you get to meet other geeks during.

Stores

Specialty stores are a really good way to run into geeks with the same interests. Table top game stores, video game stores, card stores, anime stores, ect. You won’t always run into friendly folks at the stores, but occasionally you’ll run into some rarities that don’t mind talking.

Pros

– Meet local geeks

Cons

– Some geeks shop and leave in a hurry

My Suggestions

Stop in at favorite stores more often if possible. You might run into familiar faces. Another way it to follow what I suggested at conventions. Sometimes the local stores will have events and activities that you can join in on.

My Personal Experiences

I find that I have a hard time meeting other geeks locally. I think the first reason is the culture of the city that I live in. It’s a south Texas city that is old fashion and culturally driven. There isn’t much going on in regards to the geeky world. There are barely a handful of specialty geeky stores and the conventions are even rarer. People also tend to keep to themselves and I think that makes for a lot of private geeks.

To make matters worse, I’m of the female variety. When I step foot in my local stores, I’m just oogled and not really spoken to except by the guys working there. As for geeky girls in this city, they are like an endangered species. Some rare mythical unicorn type that I can’t seem to locate. Those few that do exist are often incognito and you won’t know they’re geeky unless you can talk to them for a while.

This brings me to my own personal strategy. *Ahem* Wearing my geeky merchandise out and about.

Nothing speaks from geek to geek quite like geeky clothing and accessories. It’s the perfect bait! I’ve noticed that geeks can’t help but compliment or comment on that Bleach shirt or on this Mario mushroom key-chain. People you’d never expect will stop to comment and your mind will officially be blown. Mine has several times over.

So when all else fails, wear your geeky stuff proudly and see who speaks up!

Balancing A Geeky Life

Image

The diagram above is interesting and kind of cute, but I have a question for everyone. Is anyone else 2 or more of these geeks at the same time? — Thought so.  😉

I hope I’m not the only geek that feels as if I’m being tugged in several different directions when it comes to hobbies, interests, and life in general. I think as geeks we feel strongly about multiple things in life. Sure, some of us have one thing we are intensely passionate about, but geeks are most certainly multifaceted. This makes something as simple as choosing what to do on our day off a tad frustrating.

I.E.: “Should I read my new book or play that video game? Paint or go outside for a walk? Go shopping, or sketch?” – Britney’s Inner Dialogue

Why am I thinking about how to balance my life? Well, my boyfriend made a statement a couple of days ago that has my wheels turning.

He said, “It’s hard — I have to keep up with your geeky side and your girly side.”

I laughed when he said that. It’s most definitely true. The unfortunate thing for him is that those are only two sides of my multifaceted geek personality. It would be insane to try to stereotype me into any one category. In fact, it’d look something like this:

City born, country raised, video game playing, book reading, nature loving, pet addicted, painting, drawing, dancing, social drinking, culture fascinated, card game playing, make up and dress wearing, shopping fanatic, sports watching.. And ok, I give up.

Question is, how in the world does one balance the facets of their geeky personality?

To this day I am trying to figure this one out. Most of the time I end up looking like one of those people that can never stick with one hobby or see one thing through. That’s not the case at all. So far, my interests have been on a constantly revolving wheel. I spin it, pick something, go with it for a while, then spin the wheel again. It’s not as though I will never come back to it or that I’ve lost interest.

Theory #1 – The Revolving Wheel

Like I’ve said, spin the wheel to an interest, take it up, engage it, put it back, and spin again.

This is all I’ve got, folks. I’ve toyed with some other ideas.. like scheduling set times to do certain things on certain days during the week. I suppose if one was more structured that may work out.

I really want to know what everyone has to say about this. This is less of a stated piece and more or a, “Tell me what you think!” Please? Lol.

——-

On a girlier note, I dyed my hair. Due to Autumn rolling around, I went redder which tends to suit my paler skin and green eyes. Can anyone say Scottish? It does run in my blood, peoples. Hope y’all like it!

Where to Get the Best Geeky Merch

about picture

I know I know it’s been forever since there’s been a new post I’ve been recovering from my tonsil/adenoidectomy which has been the roughest surgery of my life but I will do a whole post on that once I’m completely better. I wanted to do this post because once I started to make money of my own and could buy the things I wanted I found it difficult to find geeky merch so I’m just going to list the places I frequent for all that nerdy goodness. It’s not a long or in depth post just a short list.

1. thinkgeek.com

Thinkgeek is a great site for gifts when it comes to Christmas or birthdays it is my go to. It has everything from cook books, caffeine products for those late night gamers, tee’s and things for your office or house. Whether you’re a zombie or star wars lover it has everything to suit your taste.

2. Hot Topic

I don’t know about you but Hot Topic really irks me for some reason. It’s not what it was when I was younger and I find it odd that there are one direction items for sale there. Not sure why but it bothers me anyway this is where I get most of my anime shirts. You just have to be on the look out for the  good ones I’ve seen many meh shirts but I have gotten some pretty awesome Naruto shirts that aren’t of the chibi variety not that there is anything wrong with chibi but sometimes I want badass battle scene shirts. Also they have a good variety of Harry Potter, pokemon and some decent gaming shirts. This isn’t geeky but it’s also where I get most of my band shirts for the older original style like rhcp and things like that.

3. Etsy

I have gotten a shirt from etsy but I haven’t bought personally anything geeky from this site but while I’m bored I do like to “window shop” and you can find very unique items and most are handmade. Support small business!

4. Teefury

I have bought so many shirts from teefury that I’ve lost count. For the price you can’t beat it and you won’t usually find another person with the same shirt or I haven’t yet anyway. I’ve gotten many Harry Potter, Zelda, Final Fantasy, pokemon and even the goonies shirts. Sometimes it does take awhile to get your shirt but I mean you’ve lived your whole life without is thus far and it’s incredibly cheap for the quality I don’t mind waiting.

These are all I can think of for now but if I think of any more I will add to this post and I hope you found it helpful.  🙂

Back from the Dead! ..And QuakeCon 2013

.. And I am back! No really, I am.

First off, I really have to apologize to all of our followers that I haven’t been posting. Serious props go to Kelly for posting even though life has been throwing both of us some crazy curve balls lately. She kept the heart of this blog going, and I appreciate it a million times over!

QuakeCon

I’d like to start off by telling everyone that I did attend QuakeCon 2013 in Dallas earlier this month. It was epic. Unfortunately, I didn’t take my PC with me, but I did get to stay at a gorgeous hotel and enjoy all the other things that come along with going to a gaming convention. I.E.: Free shit, merchandise, video game demo’s, and more free shit.

It was actually a great opportunity for me to get merchandise from PC hardware companies that I normally wouldn’t have the opportunity or go out of my way to get merchandise from. Alienware, GX Gaming, EVGA, ect. all had booths or more set up to go check new things out and get free lanyards, hats, and so on.

It also goes without saying that I absolutely loved being in a hotel filled to the brim with geeky people. Seriously. Loved it. I live in a city that doesn’t have many geeky people, or at least they are not so openly geeky. Having everyone gathering all up in one place really makes a geek feel at home.  😀

In regards to my personal life and to make a long story not so long, I am living now in my own place. Or rather, the place that was mine and my ex’s. *Ahem* It’s a long damn story. Either way, I am settled and ready to drown myself in the world of blogging once more. Look forward to more posts dropping the next few days. Hopefully FFXIV won’t keep me too preoccupied.  😉  No promises though, people. Geeky girl here.

A quick message to all those who’re playing, going to play, or trying to play FFXIV: A.R.R.:

What the hell were they thinking not creating enough room per server and then not enough servers that they had to cancel character creation on all but one North American server?!

.. Ok, I’m done ranting. But seriously, WTF, Square Enix?

On a completely different note, here are some photo’s from QuakeCon!

Thanks everyone!
