Sugar Skull Makeup Tutorial

Hey guys with Halloween coming up soon I wanted to do some makeup tutorials for all of you that are deciding to dress up. As I’m sure you’ve gathered by the title this look will be based off of the dia de los muertos (day of the dead) Mexican sugar skulls. I had so much fun putting this look together and I hope that it helps you if you are looking for a similar look.

SS1

I first started out with just bb cream no foundation or concealer to make a smooth surface for everything and took a glue stick and applied it to my eyebrows to keep them down and in place. Then using my nyx jumbo pencil in milk I outlined where I wanted my eyeshadows to go I then filled it in with my mac paint pot in painterly to prime everything.

SS2

Here I used a mac cream blush in so sweet so easy applying it with a concealer brush then I patted an elf powder blush in pink passion right on top.

SS3

I used the shade crave from my naked basics palette any matte black color will do. I just packed it with a stiff brush on the outer corner reaching up to my brow bone and i put it in the inner 3rd of the eye leaving the center pink then blended everything out. I also used the nyx pencil on my lower water line.

SS4

Now just using a liquid liner I used maybelline line stiletto make a dramatic cat eye 🐱

SS5

I brought the liner well under my actual lash line to make my eyes seem bigger and made a point at my inner corners. I also used the liner to make false bottom lashes and added falsies on top. The ones that I’m wearing are by eyelure for Katy Perry in cool kitty.

SS6

Now for the face I used the same nyx pencil all over then blended with a stippling brush. Then pressed my HD translucent powder by elf all over avoiding my eyes.

SS7SS8

Then using gel liner and an eyeliner brush go over where your original outline was and make your circle first making sure to cover your eyebrows then make the scalloped edges.

SS9

Taking crave again around the edges of the circle with a fluffy brush pack it at first then blend it out.

SS10

You can’t tell as well by the picture but I took the elf blush I used on my eyes and contoured under my cheeks then used crave on top for a more hollowed out look and along my hair line and did the same around the bones in my neck and my collar bone.

SS11

Using the gel liner and brush I made the nose. Most reference pictures I looked at the nose looks similar to a spade but comes to two points. I didn’t take it all the way down the sides because I didn’t want it to appear so wide.

SS12

Now for the fun stuff! I created my spider web by taking the same gel liner and made an upside down pyramid then separated it into four sections. For the shading I used crave again on each square just along the outer lines and used the nyx pencil in each center to give it a pop out effect. For the rhinestones I didn’t want them to be on each point I wanted them to appear to be more of random dew drops and I put them on with eyelash glue as well as the heart at the point. Make sure your hands are clean while applying the rhinestones because you don’t want them to look dirty or milky from getting makeup on your hands then handling the rhinestones.

SS13

For the mouth I put crave in the center and blended out. Then with the gel liner I made the stitching reaching on both sides to where I contoured adding a bit more shadow to the outer corner of my actual mouth and a bit along the line. I then took my liquid liner on each stitch to make them more pointed. For the rose I first drew the petals with the gel liner and filled them with the same elf pink passion blush and shaded with crave on the edges of the petals.

SS20

Last I used a pencil brush that I sprayed with mac fix plus and took a silver glitter shadow and dotted around the circle. Then just embellish however you want and of course the flower crown pulls it all together I got mine from forever 21. You don’t have to use the same colors I did you could do the same steps but with purples, blues, even greens would look lovely. Thank you for taking the time out to look at my post and if you do decide to do this look I would love to see it. Also if you have suggestions for other halloween makeup you would like to see please let me know 🙂 -Kelly
