GnG is Retiring?! Pt.1

Hello, hello.

Long time no see! We know, shame on us.

I just wanted to reach out to all of our followers to let everyone know that Geeky ‘n Girly will be retiring here within the next few months. Kelly and I have decided after much thought that we’d like to branch out on our own! So technically, we’re not really leaving the blogosphere! (Don’t be sad! Or mad!)

I have only just recently set up a new blog for myself and I would abso-freaking-lutely love it if everyone who enjoyed Geeky ‘n Girly would continue to follow me on my new blog! It’s called One-Sixth Geek, and is currently hosted via WordPress.com, but will be moving to my own domain sometime this year.

So please, clicky click and subscribe because I would hate to lose touch with some of the nicest coolest people I’ve met in the blogging world!

Much love and see everyone on One-Sixth Geek!

M.I.A. Apologies & More

Ok, so I am posting this to apologize and apologize again for my inactivity and the overall inactivity of our blog. Life has a tendency to grab hold of you and not allow for the other things that you do in you spare time. Blogging was one of those things.

On a more revealing note, Kelly and I sort of jumped into the deep end when we first created the blog and we drowned in our own exuberance. We put too much on our shoulders, and even with two of us we couldn’t meet the goals we set for ourselves. That pretty much put the flame out for us. It turned blogging into a chore and we never really intended it to be that way.

But.. We’re back!

Image

We’re excited to get back into the blogging groove, and we’ve set reasonable expectations for ourselves and each other so look forward to seeing a steady flow of posts from now on.

With that being said,

Kelly and I would like to formally welcome Whitney to Geeky ‘n Girly. We recently invited her to write with us, and we feel like she has her own unique angle on the world of being feminine and geeky. So look forward to an introductory post from her in the near future as well as her own section on our About page.

Balancing A Geeky Life

Image

The diagram above is interesting and kind of cute, but I have a question for everyone. Is anyone else 2 or more of these geeks at the same time? — Thought so.Β  πŸ˜‰

I hope I’m not the only geek that feels as if I’m being tugged in several different directions when it comes to hobbies, interests, and life in general. I think as geeks we feel strongly about multiple things in life. Sure, some of us have one thing we are intensely passionate about, but geeks are most certainly multifaceted. This makes something as simple as choosing what to do on our day off a tad frustrating.

I.E.: “Should I read my new book or play that video game? Paint or go outside for a walk? Go shopping, or sketch?” – Britney’s Inner Dialogue

Why am I thinking about how to balance my life? Well, my boyfriend made a statement a couple of days ago that has my wheels turning.

He said, “It’s hard — I have to keep up with your geeky side and your girly side.”

I laughed when he said that. It’s most definitely true. The unfortunate thing for him is that those are only two sides of my multifaceted geek personality. It would be insane to try to stereotype me into any one category. In fact, it’d look something like this:

City born, country raised, video game playing, book reading, nature loving, pet addicted, painting, drawing, dancing, social drinking, culture fascinated, card game playing, make up and dress wearing, shopping fanatic, sports watching.. And ok, I give up.

Question is, how in the world does one balance the facets of their geeky personality?

To this day I am trying to figure this one out. Most of the time I end up looking like one of those people that can never stick with one hobby or see one thing through. That’s not the case at all. So far, my interests have been on a constantly revolving wheel. I spin it, pick something, go with it for a while, then spin the wheel again. It’s not as though I will never come back to it or that I’ve lost interest.

Theory #1 – The Revolving Wheel

Like I’ve said, spin the wheel to an interest, take it up, engage it, put it back, and spin again.

This is all I’ve got, folks. I’ve toyed with some other ideas.. like scheduling set times to do certain things on certain days during the week. I suppose if one was more structured that may work out.

I really want to know what everyone has to say about this. This is less of a stated piece and more or a, “Tell me what you think!” Please? Lol.

——-

On a girlier note, I dyed my hair. Due to Autumn rolling around, I went redder which tends to suit my paler skin and green eyes. Can anyone say Scottish? It does run in my blood, peoples. Hope y’all like it!

Where to Get the Best Geeky Merch

about picture

I know I know it’s been forever since there’s been a new post I’ve been recovering from my tonsil/adenoidectomy which has been the roughest surgery of my life but I will do a whole post on that once I’m completely better. I wanted to do this post because once I started to make money of my own and could buy the things I wanted I found it difficult to find geeky merch so I’m just going to list the places I frequent for all that nerdy goodness. It’s not a long or in depth post just a short list.

1. thinkgeek.com

Thinkgeek is a great site for gifts when it comes to Christmas or birthdays it is my go to. It has everything from cook books, caffeine products for those late night gamers, tee’s and things for your office or house. Whether you’re a zombie or star wars lover it has everything to suit your taste.

2. Hot Topic

I don’t know about you but Hot Topic really irks me for some reason. It’s not what it was when I was younger and I find it odd that there are one direction items for sale there. Not sure why but it bothers me anyway this is where I get most of my anime shirts. You just have to be on the look out for theΒ  good ones I’ve seen many meh shirts but I have gotten some pretty awesome Naruto shirts that aren’t of the chibi variety not that there is anything wrong with chibi but sometimes I want badass battle scene shirts. Also they have a good variety of Harry Potter, pokemon and some decent gaming shirts. This isn’t geeky but it’s also where I get most of my band shirts for the older original style like rhcp and things like that.

3. Etsy

I have gotten a shirt from etsy but I haven’t bought personally anything geeky from this site but while I’m bored I do like to “window shop” and you can find very unique items and most are handmade. Support small business!

4. Teefury

I have bought so many shirts from teefury that I’ve lost count. For the price you can’t beat it and you won’t usually find another person with the same shirt or I haven’t yet anyway. I’ve gotten many Harry Potter, Zelda, Final Fantasy, pokemon and even the goonies shirts. Sometimes it does take awhile to get your shirt but I mean you’ve lived your whole life without is thus far and it’s incredibly cheap for the quality I don’t mind waiting.

These are all I can think of for now but if I think of any more I will add to this post and I hope you found it helpful.Β  πŸ™‚

My Alice sweater is from Forever 21 and so is the spike headband. My big green glitzy ring is from sorrelli and the other is a charm I got from hobby lobby. If you would like to see a makeup tutorial for this just let me know in the comments below. I hope you enjoyed this and as always thank you so much for supporting Britney and I πŸ™‚ -Kelly

OOTD

Yesterday I went shopping with some friends and I wanted to show you guys my outfit. Britney and I have touched on makeup but not much of fashion which is a big part of being girly. My style is girly with an edge. I love pastels and florals mixed with things like spikes and combat boots πŸ™‚

ootd5

Now this wasn’t a part of my outfit but I was excited about it and wanted to show you guys my new spike headband from forever 21 that I got while shopping it is about $4.oo and there is also a neon yellow green one available.

And here’s a picture of me and my girl. Now onto the outfit!

My dress is from Charlotte Russe it was on sale and was about $10.00. The dress is way too short to wear on it’s own and I’m right under 5ft and it’s that short on a tall girl it would be a shirt lol. So underneath I wore my american eagle midi shorts they were $24.00 I believe and should still be available. My purse came from Betsey Johnson I bought it from her website it’s originally $88.00 but I got it on sale for 49.98 but is now $59.98 and comes in many beautiful colors. I got the black to go with everything but the mint is very pretty. The bow bracelet is from charming charlies and is $10.00. I got it while I was shopping yesterday and it matched my outfit so I wore it πŸ™‚ The turquoise spike bracelet came from forever 21. I got it last year and it was about $2.00. Thanks for reading.

90’s Fashion Trends

For Flashback Friday, I decided to go back and take a look at the fashion trends of the 90’s. I’ve noticed that we’ve been a little lacking in the “Girly” department of this blog so I wanted to balance it out some.

Image

Some of the specific things I remember were the flat tops, bright neon colors, baggy pants, and grunge look. Here are some of the things I came across and decided to share.

Overalls

tumblr_lccvfkHTO51qaq5qjo1_500

Personally, did not wear them but they were really in for some reason. Haha.

Tying Sweaters/Jackets around the Waist

Image

I think we’re all guilty of this one. I just think it was too convenient not too.

Cargo Pants

Image

I loved these pants and still do! They were just too comfortable and too awesome with all their pockets. I have it in the back of my mind to track a pair down and buy them.

Windbreakers

neonwindbreakers_173113

Good geezus, I hated these things. I remember my parents buying me the set with matching jacket and pants. They were so loud and being as shy as I was, it was drawing more attention to me than I ever wanted.

Wearing your Cap Backwards

backwardscaps_173113

This was huge. “Huge” being an understatement. No one wore their cap forward unless you were actually playing baseball or were uncool.

Wallets with Chains

chainwallets_173113

These are still relatively popular, but not as much as they were back in the 90’s. You just weren’t nearly as cool or grunge if you didn’t have a chain hanging out from your wallet.

Reef Sandals

reefsandals_173113

I think everyone and their mom and her mom had a pair of these. They were just too easy and convenient, like most fashion trends in the 90’s. Comfort was key!

Slap Bracelets

slapbracelets_173113

Fashion trend or toy? Both? πŸ™‚ I say both. Kids never had so much fun slapping themselves.

Tagged Up Backpacks

taggedupbackpack_173113

If you mom knew any better, she’d buy you a black backpack. Why? Because everyone always ended up drawing or writing something on them!

These were just of the few I decided to post about, but there just a ton more. πŸ™‚ Did you grow up in the 90’s? Was there something that you distinctly remember that I didn’t post? Do share!

Fairy Tales and Mermaid Scales

Mer 5
Hello everyone it’s Kelly and I’m proud to introduce to you all our first Makeup Monday! Every Monday we will have a new post on beauty whether it be a tutorial or review we will try our hardest to bring you guys something new every Monday.

Today I’m doing a mermaid themed look as we are beginning to dive into summer I thought that it was an appropriate and fun theme. If you would like to see how just keep scrolling if I’ve made anything difficult to understand please feel free to comment below and I would be more than happy to answer any questions. I will also have a product list at the bottom of the post. πŸ™‚

Mer 20
First I’m starting out with just a matte white shade over my entire lid and a pale gold shimmer in the inner corner and the the inner part of the lid stopping halfway in.

Mer18
Now you want to take a pale green and put it on the outer half of the lid meeting the gold shade in the center and using a shader brush you just want to blend them together in the center to get rid of any harsh lines.

Mer16
Take a dark shade of green and using a crease brush the technique I use is dotting it up a little and then sweeping it over pushing into the crease as I’m making this motion and blending it out softening any harsh edges.

Mer13
This is what it should look like after you’ve done that you can add a bit more into the crease if you like just remember to blend it out.

Mer 11
Now I’m taking a pale gold glitter and just patting it all over my lid extending up to my brow bone.

Mer 9
Take a white eyeliner and line your lower water line. I also took a gold liquid liner and put it below the water line near the inner corner and pushed a dark gold glitter shadow on top.

ekfjlskdjkf
Take a black liquid liner and line your upper lash line making the line thinner towards the inner corner and extending a little past.

Mer 1
To create the wing I used a gel liner and brush making the line thick then getting lighter with your hand to make a sharp point going straight across.

mer 2
Right on top of that wing make a flick with your brush and create a second slightly smaller wing.

Mer 3
Now going almost halfway on your lower water line use the gel liner.

gjkfsjgslfd
All that’s left is add the mascara you can use any color you wish but I chose this pretty blue I felt it went well with the green.

Mer 8
I curled my hair just wrapping it around the curler to give it a more beachy look. My headband I made myself if you would like to know how I can post the link to the youtube tutorial to crochet it just ask πŸ™‚ and my dress is Chelsea and Violet from dillards. One thing I forgot to put was I put a peachy shade right on my brow bone to high light. You also want to highlight your face on your cheekbones, chin, cupids bow and nose to give yourself a dewy glow. I hope you enjoyed this any comments or suggestions for future Makeup Monday posts please just comment below.
Mer 6
Here is the item list
Eyeshadow
Maybelline eyestudio forest fury one lids, Urban decay OZ the gold half under lower water line, Urban decay Illusion on brow bone
Eyeliner
Rimmel London eye pencil in white, Hard candy liquid liner in dream girl (gold), Maybelline master duo in black lacquer, Maybelline eyestudio gel liner in blackest black
Mascara
Hard candy electric blue
Highlighter
Hardcandy glow all the way in dollface
Thank you so much for reading πŸ™‚ -Kelly
